Facts And Information On American Obesity

We are all focused on a very intriguing topic these days. And that obsession is about weight. And with good enough reason as research says that one in every three American between the ages of 20 and 74 is overweight, which is about 58 million of the people in the country. What is the difference between being overweight and being obese? Let’s look at some obesity facts.

Overweight, as the word says itself, is having an excess amount of weight in your body as fat, muscle, water and bone. Your weight is compared to other, average, weights of a person of the same gender, height and build, and you are then considered either overweight or not. Being obese is when only the body fat is measured, and it is found to be more than what a normal person of the same age, gender and height has in that given environment. Many people who are overweight need not necessarily be obese as well, as body fat is not the only contributor to body weight. But of course, practically, the tendency for overweight people to be obese is much higher.

Some obesity facts can be staggering. For example, the diseases that are shown to affect those who are obese is a very long list, and it shows clearly that obesity is pretty much the root cause for many health and psychological problems in the country today. Facts that show how obesity can double the risk of high blood pressure in a person, or that nearly 70% of heart disease patients are also obese are indeed some outrageous facts. These obesity facts are quite scary huh?

The causes for obesity can be many and varied. The most obvious cause for obesity would be the harmful lifestyles and eating habits. But there have been other obesity facts as well that have led to a person being obese. There are some anti depressant drugs that are said to have after effects of causing obesity in a person, while many disease conditions like hypothyroidism has also caused people to gain weight suddenly and become obese. Another factor that could lead to obesity has been shown to be genetics. As obesity facts show, for some reason or the other, some of us are more prone to being overweight or obese than others, for reasons we probably will never know, and due to the simple reason of having some kind of genetic affinity towards being overweight.
